This week was the last day in this class in A discourse approach in reading subject with teacher Usa Noytim.
We did the Exercise 1, we read each passage, wrote the title, and the sentence explaining the main idea of the passage. Then created a problem and solution graphic organizer. I will give some example in this exercise for you.
After that, we did the last text that was Exercise 2, we answered the questions by choosing the best answer and writing the correct answer.

Week 15 Problem and Solution
Problem and Solution.
Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or and attempted solution). The problem and solution text may seem like it would be easy to recognize, but it can be moderately difficult to identify because it is frequently cofused with the cause and effect pattern of organization, as they both have relational structure; however, if you read the passage and look specifically for both a problem and a solution to the problem, you should find it pretty easy to distinguish from cause and effect passages do nnot propose solutions to any negative occurrences within the passage but rather just explain why or how they happen.
dilemma = a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two different things you could do
We started to read an example that is about teen pragnantcies and analyzed the text.
Example: It seems like there has been a surge in teen pregnancies these days. Teen pregnancies make it very difficult for young mothers to pursue their dreams and meet the demands of an infant. Fortunately, most teen pregnancies can be easily prevented by using birth control; however, even birth control is not 100% effective. The most effective way to prevent teen pregnancies is abstinence, which is 100% effective.
There are also a few signal words which may indicate that information in a passage in ordered in the problem and solution pattern of organization: propose, solution, approach, answer, issue, problem, problematic, remedy, prevention, prevent, solve, handle, and fix

Week 14 Exemplification
Today, I learn the new lesson, the Exemplification.Exemplification writing uses specific , vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea. Likewise, exemplification provides solid support and strong evidence to prove the writer's main statement. Appropriate examples also create interest in a writing assignment.
commonly used abbreviations and transitions in exemplification text
- f.e./e.g.-for example

Week12 Definition and Classification.
classification
noun
4. Biology. the assignment of organisms to groups within a system of categories distinguished by structure, origin, etc. The usual series of categories is phylum (or, especially in botany, division), class, order, family, genus, species, and variety.
5. the category, as restricted, confidential, secret, or top secret, to which information, a document, etc., is assigned, as by a government or military agency, based on the degree of protection considered necessary to safeguard it from unauthorized use.
6.
Library Science. any of various systems for arranging books and other materials, especially according to subject or format.

noun
1. the act of defining, or of making something definite, distinct, or clear:
We need a better definition of her responsibilities.
2. the formal statement of the meaning or significance of a word, phrase, idiom, etc., as found in dictionaries. An online dictionary resource, such as Dictionary.com, can give users direct, immediate access to the definitions of a term, allowing them to compare definitions from various dictionaries and stay up to date with an ever-expanding vocabulary.
3. the condition of being definite, distinct, or clearly outlined:
His biceps have great muscle definition.
4. Optics. sharpness of the image formed by an optical system.
5. Radio and Television. the accuracy of sound or picture reproduction.
Next, I made the exercise skill practice 2 : circle the Classification Markers. Then drew a diagram showing the classification and wrote on the whiteboard
Then,I made exercise : Text1 "What is Anthropology?"

Week11 : cause and effect
Today, We learned Cause and Effect continued last week. We learned the text in this topic that was The Effect of Stress. Teacher Usa read the text with explained it for us. Then, she asked us to find discourse markers in the text and answered the exercise.
How Does Stress Affect Health?
The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked and stress-related tension builds.
Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress -- a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.
Stress also becomes harmful when people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try to relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems. Consider the following:
- Forty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress.
- Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.
- Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety.
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace. Stress costs American industry more than $300 billion annually.
- The lifetime prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50%, often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions.
Health problems in modern life
• Physical problems
• The heart by causing an increase in pulse rate high blood pressure
• The respiratory system by causing asthma, breathing problem and a loss of carbon dioxide
• Stomach aches and problems digesting food
• Emotional problems
• Panic attacks and overreact to little problems
• Mood changes such as making people angry, moody, or nervous
• Mental health problems
• Long term stress can create a variety of serious mental illnesses
• Alcoholism and addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drug
• Anorexia

Week 10 cause and effect
I have this class on afternoon sunday,we learned the new lesson "Cause and Effect"
Cause and Effect is used to show how the facts or concepts result due to other facts, events or concept. The signals words of this text structure are because, since, therefore, if...then, as a result of, thus, and hence.
Next, We discuss with our friends about cause and effect of 'Global Warming'
Then, We wrote it on whiteboard.
After that, we read the text about students are not allowed to chew gum in class. We completed the diagram, highlighted discourse markers ,and underlined the causes.
Effect
Students are not allowed to chew gum in my class. While some students think that I am just being mean, there are many good reasons for this rule. First, some irresponsible students make messes with their gum. They may leave it on the bottoms of desks, drop it on the floor, or put it on other people's property. Another reason why I don't allow students to chew gum is because it is a distraction. When they are allowed to chew gum, students are more worried about having it, popping it, chewing it, and snapping it then they are in listening, writing, reading, and learning. This is why I do not allow students to chew gum in my class.

Week 9 Comparison and contrast
Today, we're learned on Sunday. In this day, Dr'Usa gave us make up class. When Dr'Usa came to the room, she check attendance. Next, she gave us check homework with my friends. After that, she answered all exercise of homework.
Next, She told us to answer the question from the text. The first exercise is about reading comprehension to choose the correct answer. The second exercise is mark T for each statement that is true and mark F for each statement that is false.
Do men and women speak the same language?
Pattern of difference found / Number of studies
Women talk more than men / 2 (3.6%)
Men and women talk the same amount / 16 (28.6%)
No clear pattern / 4 (7.0%)
· Source: based on Deborah James and Janice Drakich, 'Understanding Gender Differences in Amount of Talk', in Deborah Tannen (ed.), Gender and Conversational
The reviewers are inclined to believe that this is a case of gender and amount of talk being linked indirectly rather than directly: the more direct link is with status, in combination with the formality of the setting (status tends to be more relevant in formal situations). The basic trend, especially in formal and public contexts, is for higher-status speakers to talk more than lower-status ones. The gender pattern is explained by the observation that in most contexts where status is relevant, men are more likely than women to occupy high-status positions; if all other things are equal, gender itself is a hierarchical system in which men are regarded as having higher status.
"Regarded" is an important word here, because conversational dominance is not just about the way dominant speakers behave; it is also about the willingness of others to defer to them. Some experimental studies have found that you can reverse the "men talk more" pattern, or at least reduce the gap, by instructing subjects to discuss a topic that both sexes consider a distinctively female area of expertise. Status, then, is not a completely fixed attribute, but can vary relative to the setting, subject and purpose of conversation.
That may be why some studies find that women talk more in domestic interactions with partners and family members: in the domestic sphere, women are often seen as being in charge. In other spheres, however, the default assumption is that men outrank women, and men are usually found to talk more. In informal contexts where status is not an issue, the commonest finding is not that women talk more than men, it is that the two sexes contribute about equally.
If it does not reflect reality, why is the folk-belief that women talk more than men so persistent? The feminist Dale Spender once suggested an explanation: she said that people overestimate how much women talk because they think that, ideally, women would not talk at all. While that may be rather sweeping, it is true that belief in female loquacity is generally combined with disapproval of it. The statement "women talk more than men" tends to imply the judgment "women talk too much". (As one old proverb charmingly puts it: "Many women, many words; many geese, many turds.")
The folk-belief that women talk more than men persists because it provides a justification for an ingrained social prejudice. Evolutionary psychology is open to a similar criticism: that it takes today's social prejudices and projects them back into prehistory, thus elevating them to the status of timeless truths about the human condition.
Champions of the evolutionary approach often say it is their opponents whose arguments are based on prejudice rather than facts or logic. They complain that feminists and other "PC" types are unwilling even to consider the idea that sex-differences might have biological rather than social causes. Instead of judging the arguments on their merits, these politically motivated critics just denounce them, and those who advance them, as reactionary and bigoted.
But their stories have a basic flaw: they are based not on facts, but on myths.
MAN
-He uses language to show independence status.
-He uses different language from woman.

WOMAN

-She is misterpret what men say.
-She talks about other people.

Week 8 Midterm test
Today we had taken midterm test for 1.30 hours before we studied. We studied new lesson that was Comparison and Contrast.
Teacher told us to think what are similarities and differences between Bangkok and Chiangmai?
Next, she showed the pictures between apples and oranges, asked us What are the similarities and the differences? and wrote them on the board.
Teacher told us to write the board for know background knowledge and opinion of the students. After that, we read the text about the distinction between high-and-low context cultures and made diagram on the whiteboard.
Hurricane Andrew
category 5
120 mph winds
-property damage was about $25 billion
-26 people died
-nearly 27 feet storm surges.
Hurricane Katrina
-Category 3
-175 mph winds
-property damage was about $81 billion
-1,800 people died
-12 feet storm surges.
Inflicted massive
-175 mph winds
-people dieds
-suffering and devastation to the people.
Then, she explained a comparison-contrast pattern. It presents similarities(comparisons) between two or more things, differences(contrasts) between two or more things, or both similarities and differences.
She ordered my homework to find the meaning of the word about similality and contrast including the examples sentences.

Two of the most destructive hurricanes to hit the United States in recent years were Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Both hurricanes inflicted massive destruction and damage to parts of the southeast United States.
When Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Homestead, Florida, it was a category 5 hurricane—the strongest measure for hurricanes. At landfall its winds measured 175 miles per hour and it dumped seven inches of rain on southern Florida. With storm surges nearly 17 feet, the damage was extensive. Estimated property damage was $25 billion and 26 people died as a result of the hurricane.
Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi and Louisiana coast as a category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 miles per hour at landfall. Although Katrina was not as strong as Andrew, it was far more destructive and deadly. This is because the city of New Orleans was in its path. A storm surge of 12 feet reached the city and caused the protective levees to break, flooding 80% of the city. More than 1,800 people died and property damage was about $81 billion.
Both hurricanes caused suffering and devastation to the people who lived through them. In measuring hurricane strength, Andrew was the stronger of the two. However, Katrina inflicted more destruction and fatalities because its path was through New Orleans.

At least 124 people are missing after the collapse of the 17-storey block during Saturday’s quake, officials say.
At least 20 people are now confirmed dead after the magnitude 6.4 tremor.
Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te said many of the missing were buried deep inside the ruins of the apartment block.
The building is one of several in Tainan city that collapsed during the quake.
Among the dead was a newborn baby. Nearly 500 people were injured, at least 92 of whom remain in hospital.
he 17 storeys of the Weiguan Jinlong (Golden Dragon) apartment complex, home to at least 256 people, crumpled down on each other as the quake took hold just before 04:00 (20:00 GMT on Friday).
More than 200 people were rescued, but a baby, young girl and two adult men were among 12 in the complex who did not survive, officials said. Elsewhere in the city, at least two other victims were killed by falling debris.
Hundreds of soldiers have joined in the rescue effort, with the help of hi-tech equipment and rescue dogs, and shelters are due to be set up for those who have lost their homes in the city of two million people.
More than 24 hours after the earthquake, fire fighters, police, soldiers and volunteers were picking through the ruins, some using their hands.
A woman surnamed Chang said she was waiting to hear from her daughter, who lived on the fifth floor of the fallen apartment block.
“She’s not answering my phone calls. I am trying to hold my emotions and stay strong. I’ll do that until I find her,” she said.
“I know they will find her, but I have also prepared for the worst,” she added.
A man in his 60s, whose son escaped and whose daughter-in-law was in serious condition, was trying to help rescuers pinpoint his 11- and 12-year-old grandsons.
Interior Minister Chen Wei-jen said investigators would examine whether the building’s construction met requirements.
The quake was shallow, meaning its effects would have been amplified, the US Geological Survey said.
There were also at least five aftershocks. The quake was felt in the capital Taipei, 300km away.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and often sees tremors.
China has offered assistance although at the moment at least, given the relatively limited scale of the disaster, it does not look as if much outside help is needed, the BBC’s John Sudworth reports from Beijing.
Back in 1999, when a 7.6 magnitude quake killed more than 2,300 people in central Taiwan, a similar offer of help from the mainland became embroiled in political wrangling, with Taiwan accusing China of exploiting the situation for its own political ends, our correspondent adds.(BBC News)

Week 4 26 Jan 2016
Today, I read the text about Secret in Narrative lesson.
The summary of this story
I put the sentences in the order to produce a summary of the second part of the story.
-Kylie watches the hen sitting on ten eggs.
-She takes the lid off the well.
-She starts to go down the well with her photo album every day.
-She watches Philip and her mother and wonder why her father is not with the.
-Philip discovers her in the well and hits her.
-Kylie throws the chicken down the well.
-Kylie hits the hen and throws it down the well.
-She chooses one special photo which makers hen feel good.
-Kylie cuts off her head from the special photo and throws it away.
I think the themes of this story are...
- Neglect: Kylie's mother had a new husband. She was interested in her husband but forgot her child.
- Coping with the absence of a parent: This story gave the example of the child who had the problems in a family. When I read it, I thought about how to solve the problems.
- Loneliness: The little girl usually separated herself from her family and stayed alone. She liked to think about her father. These thing show me that her felt lonely.
This story have many symbolic.
In my opinion...
- The egg refers to the child that was cared from their parents.
- The well refers to loneliness and sadness.
- The photo refers to the good memory that can't come back again.
- Kylie's cutting of the photo shows the umbrage of Kylie.

Today,Dr.Usa answer the question in homework and told me to discusss with my friends about : Investigation report article in my homework.
Next,I learnt in new lesson "Narrative"
Narrative is the funny story. Its purpose is to entertain. They are many types of Narrative. They are typically imaginary but can be functual. She told us the focus of the text is a sequence of action. She taught to find the orientation , complication and resolution including the specific , mainly action verbs, normally past tense and many linking word to do with time.
Then,I read the article about Secret and made the exercise to complete the summary of the first part of the story by adding three fairly short sentences. And the last I discuss my idea with my friend.

Argentine Prosecutor's Death Ignites Protests and Controversy
(CNN)The furor in Argentina over the puzzling death of a prosecutor investigating a high-profile terror attack looked unlikely to recede as the first forensic results in the case were released Tuesday.
Prosecutor Alberto Nisman was found dead in his apartment just one day before he was supposed to testify before lawmakers about allegations that the country's most powerful officials conspired to cover up Iran's involvement in the 1994 bombing.
Government officials called it a suicide, but theories of something more sinister arose immediately.
Protesters took to the streets Monday night near the presidential palace -- the Casa Rosada -- waving Argentine flags and holding signs proclaiming, "Yo soy Nisman," or "I am Nisman."
In a report Nisman filed last week, he alleged that Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kircher and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman, among others, covered up Iran's involvement in the bombing of a Jewish community center more than 20 years ago that left 85 people dead.

Jakarta bombing: Attackers, civilians killed in blasts claimed by Islamic State,
police say
Islamic State (IS) militants have claimed a gun and bomb assault on Indonesia's capital, police say, marking the first assault on the Muslim-majority country by the radical group.
Five of the seven people killed were the attackers themselves.
It took security forces about three hours to end the siege near a Starbucks cafe and Sarinah's, Jakarta's oldest department store, after a team of about seven militants traded gunfire with police and blew themselves up."A group of soldiers of the caliphate in Indonesia targeted a gathering from the crusader alliance that fights the Islamic State in Jakarta through planting several explosive devices that went off as four of the soldiers attacked with light weapons and explosive belts," the group said in a statement. The IS statement said there were 15 people killed, but the official tally according to the Indonesian Government remains at seven. An Indonesian police officer and a Canadian man were two other people killed in the attack. Twenty people, including a Dutch man, were wounded.
Authorities said the policeman was killed in a suicide attack on a police booth on the median strip of one of Jakarta's busiest roads, before shots were fired at bystanders.
Deputy National Police Chief Budi Gunawan said two attackers were killed in a shootout with police, while two others were suicide bombers. Two of the militants were taken alive, police said.
Jakarta's Police Chief Tito Karnavian confirmed the deadly blasts were linked to IS.
The Police Chief named an Indonesian militant called Bahrun Naim as the man responsible for plotting them.He has been known to police since 2010 and is believed to be vying to become the leader of Islamic State in South-East Asia.Police believe Naim is in the Syrian city of Raqqa. At least six explosions rocked the area, including one at a Starbucks cafe in the city centre, near a cluster of embassies and the United Nations offices. There was also a gunfight between attackers and police in a movie theatre that was in the same building as a Starbucks cafe, a police spokesman said.
Jakarta police said the situation was now under control but in a sign of public unease, a bang caused by a tyre bursting triggered a bomb scare that sent police cars rushing back to the scene hours after the attack.
